Overall personality:
A smart woman, Kat tends to she often likes to come off as charming and ambitious, even if she is a bit restrained. Maybe that's partially due to the fact her restraint just passes for calm and collected in the eyes of others. A firm believer that one should be prepared for anything, a belief instilled in her by her parents she often 'tests' her students to see if they are prepared to deal with any challenge she may have to dish out, and can be quite unorthodox in her methods. It's not particularly uncommon to see her toss out something completely unrelated to the topic matter at hand for her students to wrestle with; as in her eyes life is learning. You never stop, and there's never a wrong place to gain knowledge or a skill that might be useful down the road. Kat genuinely seems to derive some form of pleasure from the educating of her students, and never ceasing to educate herself.
She does have a bit of a rebellious streak, competitive nature, which has carried over from childhood. Kat tends to hold emotions in due to her traumatic past, but it is possible to break through that barrier. If you were able to manage such a feat, who knows what you might find. She's a very complex person, who isn't even fully aware of who she is herself. At this point in her life it's fairly safe to say that while she's fiercely independent, her choices and loyalties could quite possibly be swayed rather easily by those in a position to influence, however it should be pointed out she has a solid head on her shoulders and when left to ponder a decision will usually make the right one. As far as true emotion, Kat thrives when in the company of those she trusts. As I mentioned before she tends to come of as as cool and collected, is also well versed in putting on facades for others as needed, as throughout her life it's been a skill she has needed.
As far as fears, that's rather easy, she fears the loss of one of her students. Aspirations? Ultimately she'd like to follow in the footsteps of her mother and become headmistress. She likes debate, transfiguration, quidditch, dueling, astronomy, charms, educating others, being seen as a strong, well respected woman, her heritage. Not so fond of students trying to act superior to her, being told what to do, many traditional female roles, many muggle customs (largely due to the incident during her childhood), laziness, male chauvinism.

History:
Kat King grew up in America the child of two very opinionated, well educated, pure-blood professors who had moved to the United states long before she was born to avoid the pureblood supremacy movement in Europe. While they were raised like many other upper class pure-bloods themselves her parents had the wisdom that comes with age and knew that nothing good could come from such a thing. History both muggle and magical had proved that many times over.
With her mother the established Headmistress and former DADA professor at what was then then the American equivalent of Hogwarts, and her the current DADA professor and former Arithmancy professor who had literally wrote the book on the topic, being several times published on the subject of advanced arithmancy and numerology they never hesitated to raise her on school grounds.
Growing up in a an academy of wizardry and witchcraft is definitely a unique experience, and one not many will ever have. But Katherine sat in on magical lessons from the time she could talk, with the entire staff treating her as if she was their own. She was constantly absorbing bits and pieces of what she heard. Not to mention the constant emphasis her parents put on the importance of educating ones self in her down time. Suffice to say she learned early on the value of hard work. By the time she was 10, she was performing at a level that of the actual students could only admire.
At eleven her parents finally decided to officially enroll her. Waivers were granted and she was placed as as a second year in the American equivalent of Slytherin. She had a natural intelligence and ambition, despite being somewhat rebellious, and with her parents 'encouragement' she was soon at the head of her class, in every class. She also played non-competitive quidditch from a very young age, and it wasn't uncommon to see her 'practicing' against her male schoolmates as she rose through the years.
As an upperclassmen she even managed to learn basic occlumens and legimens, ans well as wandless magic. She was a prefect as well as eventually becoming her school's head girl. That is, until she walked out the Headmistress', or rather her mother's, office in a huff. Only those in the room knows what happened for sure that day. It's said Kat resigned her position at the same moment her mother suspended it. The honest truth, it was most likely simply disagreement between two very strong willed people who happened to be mother and daughter. Kat eventually was reinstated as the majority of he school staff felt any other candidates simply weren't as well suited.
When she was sixteen her father took up the defense of a muggle student, who had become a close friend of both herself and to some degree her family, despite their pure-blood roots. He saved the child but he was killed in the incident. The whole fiasco left her with mixed feeling and quite a few questions about the harsh realities of the wizarding world. She would carry these issues with her for a number of years before being able to reconcile her feelings and move on with her life.
Still, she graduated that year and went off to find her way in the world. It wasn't hard, her family was well respected, and she was welcomed with open arms many times over. Often times, she used her travels to further her skills in one way or another.
But all the skill and ambition in the world can't prevent tragedy, and five years later her mother was found dead under mysterious circumstances. Upon returning home for the funeral she had to face many of her demons. Many close family friends offered comfort. But she needed to find her own way as she always had and once again went off on her travels.
Professor King keeps many of their possessions with her at Hogwarts, as reminders of the parents and role models they were. The musty boxes and old books are quite close to her heart.
In the years since she moved to Britain she truly has come into her own. Receiving recommendations from the Minister of Magic she found herself in the position of Arithmetician professor at Hogwarts, then Slytherin HOH. Finally she was promoted to deputy head mistress, making her the youngest in school history. Often times she here's a voice in her head asking her if she's up to the task. Then she reminds herself that as long as you give your all the only one who can truly defeat you is yourself.
There is more to her story but Katherine has never been an open book, so for now at least publicly, much of her past is a mystery.
